About Us

My name is Matt Lodder and I own and operate The Cycle Surgeon.
Experience
I am one of the most highly trained service technicians in the triangle
and have been working in the bicycle industry since 1994. I am a graduate
of the Barnett's Bicycle
Institute and am BSE
certified. I am also a certified Bicycle
Fit Technician and have completed the Advanced Fitting School from Serotta
Competition Bicycles. I have performed hundreds of custom fittings over
the years. I was Service Manager and head Mechanic at The Spin Cycle until
the current economic downturn forced them to shut their doors.
Living and working in this community, which has seen tremendous cycling growth has allowed me to work on many different types and styles of bikes giving me years of valuable experience.
I have had the opportunity to teach many levels of maintenance classes allowing me to share my knowledge with inquisitive cyclists. The Spin Cycle was actively involved with many area charity rides and that gave me the opportunity to work with people in a non-retail environment giving me great experience to hone my mobile skills.
As an avid rider (mountain and road) myself I am able to understand people's perspectives and the affect the local conditions can have on bike and rider alike.
Personal
I am originally from upstate NY. I have been working professionally as a mechanic since 1994. I started my career at a local shop in NY and then moved to Cary in 1996, to work for The Spin Cycle. I started there as an entry level Mechanic and quickly moved up to Service Manager and head Mechanic.
When The Spin Cycle had to unfortunately close its doors it left a gap in the cycling community and had me wondering what to do next. Many loyal customers inquired where I would be working so they could continue to utilize my services. Having gotten entrepreneurial spirit from my father, opening my own business was a natural progression. This is what led me to open The Cycle Surgeon.
Testimonials
| David Bridenbaugh | Feb 12, 2010 | Matt has done a lot of work on my bikes over the last 7-8 years. His work is always accurate and he is very attentive to detail. Most recently, Matt installed a complete new drivetrain and built up a really nice looking set of wheels to go with it. He was a tremendous help in choosing gearing for the bike and helping decide which components to use. First ride out, everything was perfect. I would highly recommend Matt for maintenance work AND as a great source for upgrades and parts! |
| Rene Quadt | Feb 5, 2010 | Matt is an outstanding mechanic. He has build up three bikes for me and no other mechanic has ever touched my bikes for the last 8+ years. He also took expert care of my bike fitting. Matt is knowledgeable (he really keeps up with the latest developments in bikes, gear, and cycling) and is very professional. He is absolutely trustworthy. Matt will give you and open and honest answer or try his best to get you one. Considering the services charges of other bike shops and most important the personal service you get from Matt, I consider him the best value in cycling in the area. Highly recommended! |
| Brian | Oct 13, 2009 | I recently participated in the Bike MS event, and the first day, I realized near the beginning of the ride that my bottom bracket had become loose, as it was making noise. Fortunately, Matt was at the first rest stop where he completely rebuilt my bottom bracket and tuned up my bike in short order, and what's more, he was working as a volunteer! Thank you so much, Matt: I owe you one. |
