About Us

My name is Matt Lodder and I own and operate The Cycle Surgeon.
Experience
I am one of the most highly trained service technicians in the triangle
and have been working in the bicycle industry since 1994. I am a graduate
of the Barnett's Bicycle
Institute and am BSE
certified. I am also a certified Bicycle
Fit Technician and have completed the Advanced Fitting School from Serotta
Competition Bicycles. I have performed hundreds of custom fittings over
the years. I was Service Manager and head Mechanic at The Spin Cycle until
the current economic downturn forced them to shut their doors.
Living and working in this community, which has seen tremendous cycling growth has allowed me to work on many different types and styles of bikes giving me years of valuable experience.
I have had the opportunity to teach many levels of maintenance classes allowing me to share my knowledge with inquisitive cyclists. The Spin Cycle was actively involved with many area charity rides and that gave me the opportunity to work with people in a non-retail environment giving me great experience to hone my mobile skills.
As an avid rider (mountain and road) myself I am able to understand people's perspectives and the affect the local conditions can have on bike and rider alike.
Personal
I am originally from upstate NY. I have been working professionally as a mechanic since 1994. I started my career at a local shop in NY and then moved to Cary in 1996, to work for The Spin Cycle. I started there as an entry level Mechanic and quickly moved up to Service Manager and head Mechanic.
When The Spin Cycle had to unfortunately close its doors it left a gap in the cycling community and had me wondering what to do next. Many loyal customers inquired where I would be working so they could continue to utilize my services. Having gotten entrepreneurial spirit from my father, opening my own business was a natural progression. This is what led me to open The Cycle Surgeon.
Testimonials
| Cliff Swanson | Dec 18, 2011 | "...I'm gonna take it to Matt", is a phrase heard frequently among mountain bikers in the Triangle. Whether from a new rider just becoming sensitized to the feel and sounds signaling the need for maintenance, or an experienced home mechanic who does most of their own routine maintenance (likely using skills learned from Matt), a trip to the Cycle Surgeon gets the job done and done well. I take my bikes to Matt because he works on them like they are his own, because he always shares maintenance tips with me without hesitation, and he's rescued me and my bikes from countless self-made disasters over the phone when I've gotten myself into a jam while working on a bike myself. All this with good humor and without the superior attitude sometimes encountered among lesser qualified, inexperienced "mechanics" who tarnish the profession and turn people off to cycling. Supporting a local entrapreneur who provides a needed service with professional knowledge, skills, integrity, and excellent customer support means whenever a bike maintenance issue arises that I can't diagnose or fix myself, "I'm gonna take it to Matt". |
| Stacey Richardson | Dec 4, 2011 | Matt Lodder is by far the best bike fitter and mechanic I have ever worked with. For more than seven years, he has amazed me and my athletes with his high level of expertise, patience, and precision in his work. Matt is a perfectionist and displays tireless patience with every single client, from beginners to professional cyclists and triathletes. For me, personally, Matt's bike fitting contributed to breakthrough performances in both my road cycling and time trialing. He has done my fitting and repairs throughout my transition from elite amateur to professional triathlete. Among other feats, he set me up perfectly for medalling at short-course ITU World Championships , then guided me to comfort for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, and laid hands on my bike every single year I've won the North Carolina Triathlon Series. If success as an athlete means having a great performance team, then Matt shines as the most outstanding member of mine. As all serious cyclists and coaches know, the best thing you can do to improve your cycling performance is to have an outstanding bike fit. For almost four years I have bet every last one of my athletes on his bike fits, wagering one free month of coaching. Needless to say, I have never lost this on-going bet. Thank you, Matt, for your outstanding service to both me as a professional athlete and to my amazing athletes. |
| Dan Soceanu | Oct 12, 2011 | Matt is the best bike mechanic in the area, period. He's also an expert in bike fitting - with all the creds and happy clients to prove it. I don't take my bikes to anyone else, because I know he has the expertise and the TLC that sets him apart! |
